Product Description: Forget the fancy full-motion video intros of the past. The cutting-edge gameplay that is promised in the extended intros of fighting games is finally realized in Tekken Tag Tournament. This visually stunning action game contains fully rendered 3-D characters that can execute smoothly animated martial arts moves. With polygonal characters and texture maps this real, you'll end up looking for the coin slot on your PS2.

With more than 30 characters to fight against or beside, this game allows you to pull off the ultimate human combo: tag-team fighting. By choosing two fighters with broadly divergent skills, you can greatly increase your threat to the other fighters. Also, switching out fighters can give an overextended partner enough time to rest up his or her stamina for the next tag. See what happens when one partner throws a foe, tags, and the other partner comes in keep the foe... uh... airborne. Tekken Tag Tournament contains 20 classic characters from other parts of the acclaimed Tekken series, as well as 12 new characters that can be unlocked during game play.

GameSpot Review: The Tekken series has always stood as a set of console games that went above and beyond their arcade counterparts. From additional characters to completely new modes, the series has always tried to add something that the arcade games lacked. Tekken Tag Tournament, at first glance, is the most dramatic upgrade over an arcade Tekken game to date. The graphics have been given a huge boost, similar to the upgrade that Namco's weapon-based fighter, Soul Calibur, received when it hit the Dreamcast last year. Plus, new modes have been added. But does the series capture the same magical feeling that made the previous Tekken games such smash hits? Most definitely.

Tekken Tag Tournament serves as an upgrade to Tekken 3, adding a few new moves along the way. Fighters that had appeared in Tekken 2 but were missing from Tekken 3 have been brought back as well, and most of them have lots of new moves to help balance them with the more powerful Tekken 3 fighters. Finally, the game is now fought in the same tag-team style as Capcom's versus series of fighters, so you can switch between two different characters at any time. Much like Street Fighter EX3 and Dead or Alive 2, you can have up to four players, with each player controlling a different fighter in the tag battle. However, unlike most other tag-battle fighters, Tekken Tag rounds end after only one of the two fighters have been defeated, rather than letting the battle continue as a one-on-two affair. An option that let you configure this would have been nice. Aside from the standard tag-battle arcade mode, there is also a one-on-one game that makes Tekken Tag Tournament more like the previous Tekken games, as well as the standard team battle (though it is now a tag-team battle), time attack, and survival modes. Unlockable modes include a theater mode, where you can watch all of the game's endings; a gallery mode, which lets you pause the game at any time and snap a screenshot of the action that is saved to your memory card for later viewing; and Tekken bowl mode, a bowling minigame that lets you hit the lanes and toss glimmer globes at Heihachi-headed bowling pins. Each character has a different bowling style that affects speed and control. The character endings, with the exception of the game's final boss, are rendered using the game engine. This presumably saved time during the game's development. As a result, they're short, mostly meaningless, and decidedly less than impressive. By comparison, the prerendered intro and the final boss' prerendered ending are simply incredible pieces of footage. In Japan, the TV commercial for the game is simply an abridged version of the game's new intro movie. Very striking stuff.

Graphically, the game has taken a very large leap, and the arcade version of the game looks downright ugly by comparison. The characters are very, very smooth, and the backgrounds are amazing and filled with lots of movement, from helicopters to crowds of spectators. Some stages are well lit, showing off some really excellent lens-flare techniques. There are also some nice little touches, such as grass being crushed down by falling fighters then slowly springing up afterward. However, the game suffers from one particular problem that has in fact been seen throughout the series, but with the power of the PlayStation2 behind it, you'd expect it to be a thing of the past. The problem is the same one that showed up in Street Fighter EX3. While the backdrops of the fights and the ground on which you fight look great separately, they don't mesh very well. The result is two different types of scrolling, making it look as if the battle is occurring on a small, circular spinning platform surrounded by a nearly stationary background. It's easy to miss while you're actually playing, but it sticks out like a sore thumb on watching the game closely. Also, the game uses much of the same animation and motion-capture data from Tekken 3. Sure, the characters look pretty incredible, but with the identical animation quality, even as good as that animation was, the game looks and feels a little on the stale side. The soundtrack is full of techno and vocoder robot voices that will either endear you to the soundtrack or drive you up the wall.

How much you enjoy the game will directly relate to one factor: If you played so much Tekken 2 and 3 that you couldn't possibly play another match, Tekken Tag doesn't offer enough new features to draw you back in. But if you've stayed away from the Tekken series for a long time, Tekken Tag is a very warm homecoming, delivering the same solid gameplay that Tekken fans crave in large doses. Still, you won't be able to stop yourself from wondering what Namco could have done with the game if it had been designed on the PS2 (or comparable arcade hardware) from the start. Guess we'll all have to wait for Tekken 4 to find that out.--Jeff Gerstmann--Copyright © 2000 GameSpot Inc. All rights reserved. We had to wait a long time for the release of Tekken Tag, but I think it was worth the wait. It has a new style of fighting that I like the tag team fights make for longer more interresting fights and the team battle mode makes for even longer battles. This game has a high replay value, it's not as good as good old Tekken 3 but it is funner than Tekken 4, but we wont go there.

This is still the best Tekken game out there, yes Tekken 4 has come out but it still has the same graphics as this one and it's not as fun. Tekken Tag includes most of the characters from the previous three games, and in the normal game you get to choose two instead of one characters to play as. Of course for those of you that like fighting just one on one, there's a mode for that also. There's also this weird bowling mode too, and while that gets fun for a little bit it tends to get boring after awhile. I like this game a lot but the only thing that dissapointed me were the characters' ending movies. I mean they're good but they all have the same music and no real cinematic feel to them. In fact the only ending that has really awesome graphics is the last boss's. But other than that everything about this game is awesome, the music, the control, the executable moves, replayability, everything. Even after I got everything possible in the game I still find myself playing it. So get a group of friends together and kick each others butts, on this game that is.:)

Tekken has always been the social butterfly of the Fighting Genre. This game offers a good time without the long term commitment. You will likely love it and spend as much time with it as you can, but in the end you'll find it just lacks substance.

Tekken Tag has a very small learning curve and it won't take very long to learn how to wield at least one character well. That being said, many of the characters are similar, and the techniques you'll use against you're opponents don't vary much between fighters. This makes it very easy to go in and slug away at opponents regardless of who you're using. This of course comes at the cost of the likely outcome that you'll get tired of an opponent who falls for the same tactics every time.

This game truly shines in PvP however, especially in multi-tap 4 person tag mayhem. This truly is fun, and ranks this game as my favorite way to waste a night with a handful of friends. The PvP is better than Namco's more recent Tekken 4.

In general, if you're looking for a great, relatively inexpensive game that you can share with your roomates and have a great time with, look no further than the "Add to Shopping Cart" button above. If you're looking for a great single player fighting experience, I'd recommend Tekken 4 or, even better, Virtua Fighter 4 (which is beyond amazing). For [$] bucks however, you won't do much better than this.

Here are the pros and cons of the game

Pros:
nice graphics
Tag Mode
The gameplay
Value
Tekken Bowl
Old Favorites are back
end replay
1 on 1(For old school fans like me)
ability for 1-4 players
pair play mode
alot of alternate costumes
Very realistic
A great jump and improvment
The genus behind this game is exellent
34 characters!? it's too good 2 be true
Well it's Tekken so it had 2 be good

Cons:
What the heck happend to the movies??
U lose after 1 character is KOed
Only 3 movies are pure 3D
Some old favorites u gotta hate
The replay value is low after u do everything
There is no story(It was just a fun game to put out)
The movies have no meaning
Nobody has their own stages

The replay value and the storyline was what I was looking for, but the game still lasts, and usally the story isn't suppose to matter, but I like storys of games. But fighting games were ment to be here 2 kick sum ..., and that's what Tekken Tag is here 4. If u love fighting games and if u have a PS2, and don't have this game, u need that head examined, cuz dis is a great game

Excellent game!, September 9, 2002

All Tekken fans this is a great game! The tag action is great and it was done very well and isn't choppy at all. Granted yes, they could have put in more tagging moves (like DOA Hardcore) but even so, the game is solid. It's a lot easier to do combos and for the most part. Most of your favorite characters got new moves and some of the best characters of Tekken's past were brought back such as: Jun, Bruce Irvin Kunimitsu and Baek.

Enjoy this game and Happy Gaming!

GAME IS WORTH IT, August 24, 2002

Graphics great. Stunning. Unbelivable.

Sound effects are awsome but the music is horrible. Nobody listens to techno so lets go.

Loads of characters with a few new skills and moves, especially double teams.

Command list is longer. King's unstoppable wrestling combo is viewable in command list. In pracice mode, u can watch moves being performed by the cpu just by choosing the name in the command.

Gets boring easily if u play too much, play alone or have all other tekken series.

No Gon. No Dr.B.No Tekken force or tekken ball. But there is a tekken bowl.

U can take snapshots of the match.

Movies are too short but most of them are funny.

Backgroud is still the same as tekken 3. A wall with a picture. But it is lively. Choppers flying aroung. People cheering. Heicachi's soldiers gaurding. Different times of day affect the grounds and color of characters.

Not as good as I expected, July 29, 2002

At first the game had graphics that I thought couldn't get any better, but when I saw the movies, I was very disapointed, because it looked just like the gameplay graphics, and the begining movie looked real. I beat the game with evrey single character, and saw the same old corny, short, messed up, no meaning movies. The movies lacked the great real 3D graphics of the past Tekkens. And The game puts up no challange, even on Ultra hard. And A big problem is u lose after 1 character is K.O.d. And it has nothing to do with the Tekken Series. The good thing is they brought back good old Tekken 2 characters(including my favorites Kazuya, and Lee) and it offers Tekken bowl. And they, as always, make the fighting graphics look great. If u love Tekken 2 and Tekken 3, this is a game for u. If u haven't played Tekken in a long time, this game welcomes u back with a warm reception, but if u want a Tekken game with meanin' wait till Tekken 4, cumz out September 27.

Tekken Tag Tournament - A MUST-BUY Game for PS2, July 20, 2002
Reviewer: Gir from Bronx, NY, United States
I bought this game more than a year ago and I must say, it is a very good game for the Playstation 2. There are very smooth graphics, a lot of characters (34 in all; 20 default, 12 unlockable characters, and 2 secret characters: Angel and Tiger Jackson), and many game modes to explore; which certainly up the replay value.

TTT brings us a new way of fighting: Tag Team Combat. It allows you to pit 2 fighters against 2 and enables tag throws and combos to be used during battles. You can have up to 4 human players fight against each other (Pair Play Mode) with the help of a PS2 multitap. :-)

You start out with 20 characters and you have to beat Arcade Mode with each of those characters in order to unlock additional characters, such as Devil/Angel, Ogre, or Lee Chaolan. (Psst...you can play as Tiger by selecting Eddy Gordo with the START button and you can play as Angel if you select Devil with the START button as well!) After unlocking all of the characters, there are other modes to unlock and play, such as Tekken Bowl (a bowling game) or Theater Mode (to view the movies included in the game). There are other secrets to unlock as well, but I'm letting you find out what they are. :-P I was disappointed a bit because Namco did not include Gon and Dr. B from Tekken 3. :-/

The gameplay is very good; there are a lot of combos and moves for all of the characters and the graphics are excellent. Although the game doesn't have a story to it, it is made up with very nice cinematic sequences a.k.a. movies that blow you away with graphics...once again. :-D

Namco did a very good job with this game and I am anxiously waiting for the American release of Tekken 4. I hope you enjoy this game and for those of you who haven't gotten this yet...GET IT NOW! :-)

This is what Tekken is all about, July 16, 2002

This title is excellent and by far the best Tekken of all. The graphics are truly amazing, the gameplay remains unchanged, the sound is good and the tag feature is marvelous.

As a fan of the Tekken series I enjoyed this game a lot more than Tekken 4 (I have the japanese version) and just can't get enough of it. You can play with all characters from all Tekken series with the new fast gameplay and this version has quite a few new moves for all characters than Tekken 3. It's now easier to perform the 10-hit combos and the tag combo system just adds to fun. When you play with certain characters such as Hwoarang and Baek or Jin and Jun you can perform some real cool tag changes.

Overall: with stunning graphics, addicting gameplay and thousands of moves at your disposal you just can't go wrong with Tekken Tag Tournament and not forgeting to mention that it's a great warmup for Tekken 4 so stop reading and go buy it!
