Amazon.com Review: Sports fans with little interest in video basketball games may want to rethink their stance after getting a look at Sega Sports’ NBA 2K3. They--not to mention hard-core basketball simulation enthusiasts--will likely find it hard to keep from being drawn in by the game’s picture-perfect detail, engrossing realism, and challenging gameplay.

Like NFL 2K3, NBA 2K3 is presented in the patented ESPN style. The game has all the sights and sounds of the NBA: the pomp and circumstance of pregame introductions, accurate arena re-creations, realistic player animations and sizes, and fluid dribbling and shooting (including crossover moves and the ability to change shot direction in midair). All of this is accentuated with special touches such as alley-oops, tipped shots, the ability to make passes on the fly, fierce rebounding battles under the basket, and the added drama and excitement of the ball bouncing off the rim before it either falls in or goes awry.

NBA 2K3 offers a host of moves and modes on either side of the ball, with 25 offensive and 10 defensive plays from which to choose. Throw in fully customizable strategy options--everything from player clutch factor to computer shot tendencies, plus all types of shot percentages and fouls--and it’s easy to create the ideal matchup and game environment. The limitless roster manager feature also ensures that league and franchise modes will keep from getting stale.

Street mode offers a break from the grind of NBA play, allowing you to go two-on-two or all the way up to five-on-five in nine playgrounds and gyms. Pick your favorite players from current teams or choose greats from the '50s through the '80s and go at it as the Ballers vs. the Ringers. Street even features requisite trash talk such as "Yeah! You like that?" and grunts backed with "Get some!" --Larry White

Pros:
Accurate, eye-catching graphics
Challenging artificial intelligence
Realistic gameplay

Cons:
Blocky player movements
Players celebrate with fans after key shots
Lob quality of passes

Manufacturer's Description: NBA 2K3 powers forward with the kind of improvement that only results from an off-season dedicated to perfection. Imagine jump shots so real players actually adjust their movements in midair based on distance from the hoop and defensive pressure; a passing touch that gives you the control to skirt a defender or start a fast break; and dribble moves that let you jab left, rock right, cross over, spin, and much more. It’s all happening in NBA 2K3. No other game delivers the physical element of basketball like this: accurate impact from collisions, especially hard fouls and authoritative dunks; shot blocking with emphasis on precise hand-to-ball contact; and the ability to lunge for the loose ball, even if it means ending up on some celebrity’s lap. With commentators that analyze strategy, cutscenes portraying lifelike player interaction, uniforms that move like real fabric, and a brand-new ESPN broadcast system that wraps it all together, NBA 2K3 provides the complete NBA experience.

Not Perfect.... But Better then NBA Live, December 1, 2002
Reviewer: Ryan from San Diego
First of all, NBA 2k3 made a great stride from its predeccessor NBA 2k2 which was rushed for a PS2 release. The newest thing about this version is the new licensing by ESPN which is a pretty cool thing until they mention ESPN and/or Sportscenter for the 10th time in a single game. Lob passes take some getting used to but it can be changed so your passes are a little quicker. New animations for passing and shooting make the gameplay more varied and it helps it look more like the real thing. The graphics, as expected, are pretty great with good details on the uniforms and the courts. Players look very much like their real-life counterparts. Some players even have their own shoes like Iverson and Mcgrady! The game is a tad too easy once you get good at it and no lead the computer has is safe. Sega proved that its Dreamcast success could be carried over to the PS2. I have not played NBA Live 2003 but I have played almost every other edition of the game and I can truly say NBA 2k3 is the more accurate game. NBA 2k3 focuses on a detailed Basketball sim while NBA Live is more of an arcade players game. You can also create a player and a team on 2k3. And as in 2k2, the classic teams are back ranging from the 50's and 60's to the new 1990's teams. This game is a must buy for a basketball fan. It is the best hoops game currently out on the PS2.

This game is amazing! When ever I like to play this game all I have to do is challenging people online! There is no more of begging and asking my busy friends to come over and play. It is now their options. Despise of how people say about the flaws in the game, I still think it is the best game out there.

best basketball game out this year by far, November 15, 2002

This game improves last year's NBA2k2 by far. It blows away all the other NBA games out this year, The post game is realistic and the franchise mode is awesome.

Buy Live 2003...not 2K3...here's why..., November 11, 2002
Reviewer: A gamer from Indianapolis, IN United States
I bought 2K3 and traded it for Live. GRAPHICS: 2K3 graphics are NOT better. SOME faces are OK compared to Live, but Live's are better in general. Sure, you have sweat in 2K3, but mainly from you trying to figure out the menus, trying to figure out the illogical controls, and fretting about how to tell your sweetie you dropped fifty bucks on a horrible game that you can't get your $$$ back for. ANIMATION: In 2K3 it is like choppy, wiggly, ice skating on a basketball court. Live is smooth and fluid. The camera follows you much better in Live. 2K3 gives you lots of options but none of them are quite right no matter how much you adjust them. The menus in Live are simple and logical. OPTIONS: Live has better "create a player" options. 2K3s seem like an afterthought. SOUND: The sound in Live is WAY better in two areas: In Live the crowd follows the game. Cheers to pump up your team or boos on particular plays are constant and timed appropriately. 2K3 is very monotone, not in sync with the game at all, just a "hahhhh" recording playing in the background. Also, the commentary in 2K3 is repetetive and boring. OTHER IMPORTANT FEATURES: If you want player lock, which I did, you will not get the same result in 2K3, only frustration. You can set 2K3 not to follow the ball (kind of like player lock) but be careful what button you hit or you'll switch players and then have to toggle your way back. Live locks on the player if you want it and it stays there, if that's what you want. GAMEPLAY: Live blows 2K3 away. Anyone saying they want 2K3 for the realistic gameplay is just trying to justify to themselves why the spent the money for such an awful game...I know, I thought the same thing for a while until I just finally admitted to myself I made a mistake picking 2K3 over Live. No 1 on 1 in 2K3? Give me a break...just wait 'til you see the horrible practice mode with the players standing on the sideline...ridiculous. The controls are a joke, the passing is screwed up...just save yourself the time and trouble...buy Live and just have a blast playing ball. If you want it less arcady, raise the skill level and don't slam dunk it every time down the court...run a play, if you can resist the temptation to use the better and easier to execute moves in Live. Live is a blast, more realistic, slicker, etc...don't believe the 2K3 hype, trust me, I know, it's not true. Live is 10 times better.

THis game is perfect. The speed and the graphics. It has the most depth and the most real basketball game in the world. Live sux!! It was too fast and is unrealistic. The only reason they r selling better than 2K3 is cuz EA is just good at advertising.
Get 2K3!

Make room on the bandwagon, here comes another!!!!!, October 31, 2002
Reviewer: whudiz from VA
I have always been an EA Sports Fan and had always looked forward to its NBA LIVE each year. However, after last year's disappointing NBA LIVE 2002 I decided to rent before buying. So I rented NBA 2k3 and NBA LIVE 2003, and the grass looks nicer on the other side(The NBA 2k3 side). NBA LIVE 2003 has the great feature of the freestyle dribble, however, it reminds me too much of NBA Street. I already have NBA Street and what I am looking for is a good sim. In my opinion NBA 2k3 is a very good sim, so move over and make room on the bandwagon. However, this in no way means you will prefer NBA 2k3 yourself, although I personally do. The only advice that I can give is RENT BEFORE YOU BUY.
