Amazon.com Product Description: Burnout is a high-risk, high-energy arcade-style street racer. No learning curve is required; just pick up and play. The game monitors your driver's heart rate, as you're rewarded for near misses. Civilians steer clear! There's only one way to drive in Burnout: dangerously. Force traffic into your opponent's path and risk a head-on collision to secure a win. Slide, cut close, and drive into oncoming traffic and you'll be rewarded for your risk taking. Crashes are based on actual crash and damage physics for extra realism.

Instant replays allow you to relive your handiwork from multiple angles in all its cringe-inducing, metal-bashing glory. The advanced traffic AI means civilians try to avoid and warn you while opponents try to slam you off the road. Cruise the U.S. and Europe on 14 awesome, traffic-filled courses through cities and into the countryside. More than 300 vehicles fill the streets and highways, making reckless racing and wild demolition a certainty. Dolby Digital surround sound brings the roar of screeching tires and twisting metal to life. The game is analog-controller-compatible, so you can feel every turn, skid, and crash.

Amazon.co.uk: Like your racing games fast, furious, and full of spectacular smashes? You're in luck. With Burnout, Acclaim removes all pretense of providing a serious simulation and instead serves up a delicious dish of pure arcade fun on the PlayStation2. The title features two key selling points--the speed of the action and the spectacular crashes. To facilitate these, the setup couldn't be more straightforward, as the aim is simply to be first past the post. You can increase your chances by driving more dangerously, although that comes with obvious pitfalls in the shape of those aforementioned smashes. Let's just say that to get through the game you're going to have to take your chances.

Contrary to the serious approach of Gran Turismo 3, this is foot-to-the-pedal stuff, and tremendously good fun to play. And when you do put your proverbial foot down, get ready to move, for this is a blisteringly fast title that deceptively requires more concentration than at first appears. The downside is that this won't appeal to those who like their racing games nice and serious, nor to those looking for anything particularly innovative. Burnout has few qualms about marrying the multimedia power of the PlayStation2 to a game engine that forsakes bells and whistles for speed, destruction, and sheer good fun. Fortunately, in this case, it's all the better for it, making it yet another PS2 four-wheel treat. Highly recommended. --Simon Brew

Shock-horror, GT3 fan likes Burnout!, November 4, 2002

Maybe I'm an exception but people who say that good reviews for this game must have no experience of other driving games are seriously wrong. Having got 96 point something percent through GT3 and completed all the main missions in GTA3 I bought Burnout on a recommendation from a friend. I'm happy to say that I was not disappointed, true it's a little short (by no means as bad a MGS2) but I feel it has high replay value. Even now I turn the stereo on (Burnout's music is about the lowest point) and sit down to do a couple of races when I have some spare time. The game is all about gameplay and who cares if the graphics aren't upto scratch compared to GT3, you're flying through city streets dodging traffic like a cat on speed. One reviewer mentioned that the manual is lying about being able to drive a truck, it's not; sometime after completing the 3rd or 4th championship the oppurtunity occurs. In total I have aquired a total of 7 cars so far and there may be more.

i broke my controller i got so mad at this game, June 29, 2002

at first you're like"wow look at that crash that was awsome",and you drive into oncoming traffic nearly hitting almost every car. but then you find out how annoying this game is.the only fun level is the first one. every time you crash you lose five seconds from your already rediculuosly low amount of time to get to the next check point and once you lose every race because you crashed twice and couldn't make it to the next check point in time you will find your self saying "why the heck did i waste 50 bucks on this?!" acclaim had a good game but put to much focus on the racing aspect of it. if you want a good racing game get grand turismo three and if you wanna destroy cars get twisted metal:black or twisted metal:black online(won't be out for about 3-4 months but has more features than tm:black) all this game is good for is annoying you

One of the best games on the PS2, May 29, 2002
Reviewer: jesusfreakage13 from Memphis, TN
This is absolutly the BEST racing game on the PS2. I love its exilerating speed, unpredicatable traffic, and I love running into the traffic at 135 MPH with a tow truck. It has a very high risk level, but once you get used to how all the cars feel (which only takes one or two races), you don't care. Just race as fast as you can into the opposing lane in a double lane tunnel or drift around a tight curve, barley missing a swerving bus when you come out of it, this game provides a constant adrenaline rush that you'll love. It has pretty good graphics and takes advantage of the PS2's capabilaties as far as that goes, but you don't even care about the graphics all that much because you got to keep a sharp eye on the road. If you are still unshure about this game, rent it and you WON'T REGRET IT.

I just got the game BURNOUT by AKLM, it is by far one of the best controling game out on the PS2. The handling is very smooth, the car don't slide all over the place when doing a quick turn. The turn signal signs (marks) on the road is well placed. It gives you enough time to let you turn and when to turn. (Those that played NFS on the PS1 knows what I mean). And this game, you race down a freeway and city with 100 of cars driving on the road.

Definetly not worth buying, March 22, 2002
Reviewer: mat4132 from Brooklyn, NY United States
RENT THIS GAME BEFORE YOU EVEN CONSIDER BUYING IT!! This game is ridiculously lacking. The graphics leave MUCH to be desired. This looks more like a PSone game than a PS2 game. The crashes aren't as glamorous as people say they are; in a light front collision, all of the windows instantly crack, after a hard collision, all of the windows break and fall out, revealing the cars' incredibly detailed (sarcasm =P) pitch black interior. Once in a while you get a nice crash but its quite rare... (flips and such). Most of the crashes are spinouts, rear end collisions, and head on collisions. Oncoming traffic is so ridiculously blurry, you dont see it until its practically in your face. At intersections, there are arrows preventing you from going off course, and from behind these arrows comes cross-traffic (usually conveniently placed 18-wheelers) that is nearly impossible to see. There is NO HANDBRAKE. The tracks are OK, but tacky and repetitive. The music is the most generic stereotypical techno music I have ever heard (with the exception of the intro tune, its kinda nice). The opponent cars dont ever crash or slow down until theyre on your screen, so basically theyre always close behind. Even if you somehow manage to lose them, even one crash will magically bring them right on your tail, and they usually pass you while you try to accelerate. The crashes aren't really fun considering you lose 'burnout' (boost) because of them, and they take off a lot of time while it replays the crash three times over. The racing has its own feel to it... it might be fun, but not for long...

Stop whining - Cool game!, March 11, 2002

This is a fast-paced arcade style game (anyone remember Cruisin'???). Sure, if you want ultra realistic car tuning, go elsewhere, but if you're looking for all-out racing through populated streets this is it. To all the reviewers crying about the crash sequences disrupting the flow and taking too much time off the clock, try this -- STOP CRASHING. Sure you lose 5 seconds for crashing, what do you expect? It would sure take more time than that to fix your car, and if crashing didn't waste any time off your clock what would encourage you to drive better? Overall a good game, definitely a great rental.

Lame Car Selection / Crashes Disrupt Gameflow, March 6, 2002
Reviewer: Mike Young from Chicago, IL USA
The car selection is this game comprises of very few, fake versions of really boring, standard modern day cars. Nothing interesting about any of them.

The crashes which the game prides itself on totally disrupt the flow of the game and they happen WAY too often. If you rear-end someone, you crash. If you bump into the curb at just the wrong angle, you crash. These crashes don't happen in real time and are not recoverable - the game actually goes into a widescreen movie mode to replay the animation up to 3 times. Totally ruins the momentum of the game and makes things way too touchy.

The computer controlled cars don't ever slow down except if you are basically "on-screen" with them, and then they might crash. Otherwise, the the game just advances them at a seemingly fixed, fast speed going around the course...

The graphics are good, and the control of the cars is pretty good too, but it's all wasted on critical problems with the game. Waiting for Need for Speed 2 still I guess.

Terrible - not worth the [money], March 4, 2002
Reviewer: A gamer from Boston, Ma United States
I hated this game. True, I'm addicted to GT3, but this is nothing close. The basic point of the game is to beat at least 1 of your 4 opponents. In addition to this, there are checkpoint times you must also meet. You get points for crashing, but from the little I played, these points seem worthless. This is similiar to Crazy Taxi (the only other game I have returned).

If you're looking for a car/racing game, without question buy Gran Turismo 3 (absolutely amazing), or even Grand Theft Auto - which has great driving. If you're looking for just a "fun" game - check out Tony Hawk P.S.3.

There are a lot of games out there that have "earned" your [money]... this is definitely not one of them...
