Features:
WARNING: Violent content and mature themes makes this game inappropriate for anyone under 17
• Mob bosses need favors; gangs want you dead
• Both narrative-driven and nonlinear gameplay
• A fully realized 3-D city
• Hundreds of characters and 50-plus vehicles

Amazon.com: With Grand Theft Auto III, Rockstar proves that not all developers are concerned with toning down the violence in their games. This sequel is even more bloody, violent, and sadistic than its popular predecessors, offering up an enormous 3-D city in which nearly any criminal act is possible. Players are free to steal cars, beat up the local population for their money (or weapons), make time with prostitutes, or simply roam to their heart's content. Those seeking more structure can embark on dozens of plot-driven missions or steal cars that let them play minigames. Nab a cop car and you can go on vigilante missions. Grab a cab and you can play a deadly version of Crazy Taxi. Take a fire truck and you can earn money putting out fires. The game just never gets boring.

As in real life, there are consequences for your criminality. As your random acts of mayhem mount up, the police start hounding you, eventually calling in SWAT trucks, the FBI, and even the army if you continue down the path of destruction. Shaking these pursuers is easily the most fun part of the game, especially when a bunch of friends are packed in the room to witness your narrow escapes.

Grand Theft Auto III is fine-tuned to near perfection in every category. All the vehicles, from slick sports cars to lumbering dump trucks, handle exactly as you'd expect and smash apart realistically when abused. The three islands in the game are rendered in terrific detail considering their size, and are packed with traffic, pedestrians, and hidden jumps. The audio is equally amazing. Pedestrians talk, cops scream at you, and you can tune in nine different radio stations whenever you are in a car. It all adds up to a monumental achievement: the rare console game for adults that manages to get everything right. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:
Offers an enormous world for players to exploit, rendered in staggering detail
Equally fun whether you go on plot-based missions or run around as a freelance crook

Cons:
Ultraviolence, foul language, and adult situations mean you'll want to keep this far away from kids
It takes too long to get from one island to another, making some missions tedious

Amazon.com Product Description: You've been betrayed and left for dead. Now you're taking revenge, unless the city gets you first. Mob bosses need a favor, crooked cops need help, and street gangs want you dead. You'll have to rob, steal, and kill just to stay out of serious trouble. Anything can happen out here. Grand Theft Auto III features a fully 3-D living city, a combination of narrative-driven and nonlinear gameplay, and a completely open environment.

Players are put at the heart of their very own gangster movie, in which anything can happen and probably will. With a cast of hundreds, 50-plus vehicles--including sports cars, ice-cream trucks, boats, and buses--three hours of music, (including opera, reggae, house, drum and bass, pop, and disco), a huge array of street-ready weapons, and some of the seediest characters in video game history, Grand Theft Auto III is a sprawling epic that will show you that sometimes crime can pay, and that sometimes it pays you back.

first off peaple who say this game is gorry and has hookers Well it say on the box. back to the game. This game is the best ever because you of course get to carry guns, like a 9mm-hand gun to a flame-thrower. You drive a car, and boats and more! Go on missions to earn money and respect from other mobsters. Highjack vehicles; kill enemies before they kill you, and if you like the Sopranos you will like Grand theft Auto 3 and Grand theft Auto Vice city. So will you Work for the mob, you better strew them before they strew you, And who knows you could be a criminal master mind and own your own a mob and own the city or citys. And There is so much more!!! For more information go put Grand theft Auto 3 in a search, or go to www.GrandtheftAuto.com

Fun but some errors..., December 2, 2002

I don't really care for the gore because I LOVE IT!!! But the are a bunch of bad things after you do missions...Cops, they only go after you and like gangs try and kill you. Police will overrun you no matter if you have gameshark! They have tanks and the army at the last star (6th) that will run you car into ashes. Vice City has fixed some of these and you can also help police get criminals and get rewards! It's also funny to karate kick pedestrians off their motorcycles. If you like motorcycles, helicopters, boats and all that fancy stuff, then get Vice. If you like just being a killer then get GTA3. I'm 12 years old and I LOVE IT BABY!!!

This is an evil game!, December 2, 2002

I've heard of the things about all the Grand Theft Auto games and they're ... It's ... to go around killing innocent people and police men. It's ... to go around destroying people's property. This applies to everyone. I've never actually played this game but I've learned things about it. It's ... don't buy it!

A good reason to think about owning a PS2., December 1, 2002

Fans of the original Grand Theft auto and Grand Theft auto:2 and the gamplay that surrounded those games will be dissapointed and delighted. The top-down, helicpoter viewpoint from the first two games has been revolutionized and revamped with stunning three dimentional graphics. This is truly a go anywhere, do anything game. You will find yourself roaming around the expansive city just exploring and sightseeing. When you get the urge to, you can comit a few crimes and get involved in high-speed chases that offer edge-of-your-seat action. The story of the game is there, but it's only purpose is to give you a reason for violent activity. It does it's job well, though and pulls the gamer through a wonderfully rendered and intelligent enviroment with special missions and various things to accomplish.

This game is extremely well done. You can do almost anything. This is by far the best game I have played for PS2. I haven't played Vice City yet, but it looks just as good. Get them both. You won't be disappointed.

the most violent of them all, November 25, 2002

Much more than a controversial game, November 23, 2002

Once in a great while, a game comes out that seems to have everybody talking. Grand Theft Auto 3 is such a game. Many are drawn to this game for the freedom to do the things one could only dare to think of in the real world (unless you also dream of a life in your local penitentiary), such as stealing cars, working for the mob, high speed brushes with the law, and near about any other unruly thing you could imagine.

At first glance, this game seems to be just a novelty to push the 'mature' rating to the limit. Pop it in your PS2 and take it for a spin, and you'll likely find it to be much more. GTA3 is a mission- based game that has you running all over town doing odd jobs for the local crime bosses, doing all of your dirty work in vehicles that you steal along the way. Once inside one of these vehicles; however, the game takes on more of an arcade style driving game. I can't even begin to count how many countless times I just rode around the city in my newly acquired ride (courtesy of someone spending too much time sitting at a red light), just taking in the sights and sounds. There is just so much to take in. Cars and pedestrians are everywhere you look. Liberty City is alive and well (and full of character).

The missions are many, and very in difficulty. Some I was able to carry out fairly quickly, while others had me running around quite a bit. I was especially excited over the side quests that I could take on, such as manning an ambulance and delivering patients to the hospital. One thing was for certain; I was never bored, or starved for action. The graphics weren't the best that I had ever laid eyes on, but they certainly weren't too bad either. Hats off to Rockstar for making this game look as good as it does, considering so much happens onscreen simultaneously. Grand Theft Auto 3 has a little something to offer to everybody (in terms of variety of game-play), which is a better draw to fame than any 'mature' rating could ever garner.

This game is worse than the rumors would indicate -- by far the most value-less game I've ever seen. Among other things, the player in this game may pick up a hooker, pay her for sex (displayed in the game by a wildly rocking car), then murder her by a bloody shot to the head in order to get his money back. No, I'm not kidding, and that's just the beginning....

Here it is, one of the best games of all time. This game has hours of gameplay, and never ending things to do. Even if you beat the game 100%, you can still roam around and do whatever you like! After you beat all of the straight missions, there are phone missions, hidden packages to collect, and much more!

BOTTOM LINE: Great Solid game
