Amazon.com: Fans of past installments in the Knockout Kings series will be surprised by several changes to the 2002 version. Previously, you had to fight your way up a list of 20 challengers and fine-tune your skills by training between bouts before getting your shot at the champ. But Knockout Kings 2002 scraps all this in favor of a four-tiered pyramid system in which you need to beat just 11 out of 14 challengers before fighting for the title. While it doesn't feel as hard-earned, it's still satisfying to advance your boxer out of dingy gyms and into major venues such as Caesar's Palace. Career mode still offers the opportunity to create your own boxer or choose from the 45 available (21 past and present, 24 fictional). Inexplicably absent, however, are such greats as Rocky Marciano, Jake LaMotta, Larry Holmes, and Marvin Hagler, all of whom appeared on past versions of the game.

Also surprisingly absent this time around is the ability to throw body punches. While some boxers have this punch in their repertoires as a body combination, the best you can do with others is slug away at your opponent's head with a multitude of hooks, jabs, straight punches, low blows, or illegal backhands. And slug away you must if you expect to hold your own against stiffer competition, as finesse options are limited.

Where Knockout Kings 2002 truly shines is in its graphics, thanks to the combination of boxers' well-sculpted physiques and EA Sports's face-mapping technology. The eye-catching detail of the various arenas and rings further enhances the realism, right down to the excitable fans in the seats and the blood flying from fighters' mouths. Satisfying smacks of gloves to the face and thuds of bodies hitting the deck can also be heard in abundance. --Larry White

Pros:
Best graphics yet in the series
Lots of boxers and venues from which to choose

Cons:
New career mode eliminates past enhancements
Few opportunities to throw body punches
Fewer real boxers to select
Frenetic pace turns most bouts into slugfests

Save your money, November 18, 2002

I bought this game a few days ago because my pirated copy of knockout kings 2001 was malfunctioning. I liked KK2001 a lot and didn't think twice about buying the 2002 version. To my surprise the game went backwards, the graphics are not better, the punches have no reality in them, the control layout is terrible.

EA ... me on this one! I'll stick to pirated copies of EA's
games in the future.

Can't Get Much Worse!, July 11, 2002

I think I'd rather stand in the ring myself and get punched in the face than play this game again!
The controls are horrible and the only way to win is hit the buttons as quickly as possible.

i thought this game would be another ok boxing game, but unlike the other one i enjoy the graphics a lot more and i think it is really fun. I only wish mike tyson was in it.

This game is horrible. It isn't worth the time playing or the money you spend. If you are looking for a boxig game don't buy this. This is a button smashing free for all, the person who either has Ali or presses buttons faster will win always. If you want a great boxing game buy knockout kings 2001!

Knockout Kings 2002, June 13, 2002

The graphics are decent, but could be better. Its fun for a while, then get boring, and like I said the graphics are not that good. Like the crowd looks [bad], and the graphics on the boxers are decent. There are some good boxers up there though. Dont buy it unless you really like boxing.

Worst Boxing Game Ever, June 5, 2002

This is absolutely the worst boxing game ever, the control is slow and cumbersome. Sure it looks good but if its no fun to play who cares.

Flat out horrible, June 2, 2002

This game is the worst game I've ever played and I'm the probably the biggest boxing fan out there. The controls are horrible, I can't stand using the joystick I wish I could use the directional buttons. You can't control body shots and the manual gives NO instructions on how to throw body shots. The career mode is a disaster. Bottom line don't by this game, save your money. Good news, I heard that Mike Tyson's boxing will be better. Cross your fingers.

nice graphic but not much else, May 26, 2002
Reviewer: A gamer from Jersey City, New Jersey USA
I was a big fan of this series but EA made a wrong turn with this version. Graphics are excellent but after that everything is very poor. My main gripe is with the controls, you cannot control body shots and nowhere in the manual does it show you how. In the Career Mode, there is no training section and you are limited in how you detail your fighter. KK2001 is way better than this version, so don't even bother upgrading to this version.

Avoid at all costs, May 2, 2002
Reviewer: JONATHAN MICHAUD from New York, NY USA
This is quite frankly the worst game I have ever purchased. I had enjoyed "Knockout kings 2001" so much that I ran in to get this expecting an even better game. Boy was I disapointed!! I played it for 5 minutes and realised I had just thrown money down the drain. Buy 2001 used it is 1000000 times better. This game is unplayable.
