Amazon.co.uk Preview: Even though they were clearly aimed at children, the first Harry Potter games nevertheless managed to be quite good--an extraordinary feat considering that film-license games are usually awful. For this second crack at the gaming wand Harry moves to next-generation consoles too, and, from the two-level demo we played, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is looking even better than 2001's efforts.

Looking and playing similarly to Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda, the first level has you zapping gnomes with a stun spell and ejecting them from the garden they're roaming around in. Although simple in gameplay terms, this first little section allows you to get used to the pleasingly intuitive and flexible controls. A subsequent level is based on more traditional action set pieces, with you as Harry jumping about on platforms, avoiding elves, and using a magic spell to chop down ropes. It’s a real surprise to see a game this high profile, which would easily have sold a million if it’d been a blank disc with the Harry Potter logo, being made with such care and imagination. In fact, so good does it look so far that the old lie about nonfans of the movie/book being able to enjoy it might actually be true. --David Jenkins

i wish i could live in this game..., November 30, 2002

I am NOT a gamer. In fact, i have the attention span of say maybe a 2 year old when it comes to video games. Die 3 times on a level, i get bored. Anyways...I LOVE this game. Despite the fact that the game is probably geared towards younger players, i have found it very challenging as I am not terribly skilled at video games. It's just...well....wicked to get to run around and pull bertie bott's beans out of bookshelves and buzz hogwarts on your nimbus 2000. Only problem might be the view-point can get annoying (it is very hard to control) but overall I have spent way too many hours enjoying this game. Kids are probably way better at video games than me so would probably enjoy it even more. I also liked that the gnome throwing was in the game even though it got left out of the movie. Hours of enjoyment for children and grown people with overactive imaginations (like me).

Ok, This game is a great game for short entertainment i was at my friends house (this being my first time playing this) and I beat it in 5 hours that is EVERYTHING i loved it for those 5 hours but after that you want to go sell it... So this game is good but does not take long to get boring.

Simple, but Fun, November 26, 2002

I'm a pretty big fan of Harry Potter, so I went out and bought the game shortly after it came out. The game is pretty simple and stright-forward. It's over fairly quickly, though. And it does have to constantly load, which does get annoying after awhile. It's similar to the first game, in that you cast spells to defeat enimies, but the spells are much easier to cast this time. Quidditch has improved somewhat, you still fly through the rings, but now you have to boost and it's possible to lose the match. Some other reviewers mentioned chasing Draco and gathering money in Gringotts, howerever, there is nothing like that in the game. There is some wizard dueling, which is pretty fun. It's a good game for problem solvers and those who just want to have some fun exploring Hogwarts and it's grounds.

Extremely fun, nonviolent, and well-planned game, November 26, 2002

OK, so Iam 31. But I did get this for myself and my nephew & niece to play together over Thanksgiving. I intended to play it for a little while, and ended up playing for hours over a few nights. The game itself unfolds well, with Ron Weasley or other chracters providing suggestions of things you need to do when you take too long exploring or doing things other than what you're supposed to. There are quite a lot of opporutnities to explore the world of Harry Potter, and although you might think it is nearing its end, it seems to find a new thing to challenge you with. Children and adults both will find it entertaining, graphically sharp, and interesting enough to keep them occupied for quite a while. You never see anyone die, only a character comes back to a previous starting point. In all, I would have no problems letting younger children play this game. The big test will be when I see my niece and nephew in a couple days, and then they will have to decide who gets to play and who gets to watch. In short, a very good game for anyone.

This game is harder than the 1st.But I beat it anyway.(Hint: about in the middle of the game go out to the castle gronds and talk to some people who will tell you they have lost something. If you find it they will give you Griffonder House points.) The willow tree is actually too hard. I lost to it once. I can't believe that Gilderoy Lockheart made you miss the Hogwarts Express. Hermione and Ron tells you to go do too many stuff. I mean, I almost lost all my house points trying to run from the people who were on duty at night. But I got lucky because somebody was as blind as a bat. I hate those ghost in the Grand Staircase. If they hit you they make you lose every flavored beans. But one thing I really hate is going back to the Forbbiden Forest. It took me about an hour and a half to get out of there! Eer... anyway this game is the perfect one for me and if it is for you buy it now!

PS.Please buy this game so you can know how fun and dangerous it is!

great game!, November 20, 2002

Personally I think that this game is great. I'm eighteen years old and I love harry potter. However it does take a long time to load which can get very anoying at times. Also the game isn't exactly easy but that's one of the reasons that I like it. If you are going to spend [money] on a video game it seems to me that you wouldn't want to beat it in a couple of days. I like the challenge of it. Also I just like the fact that it goes along with the book. So if you are looking for a really easy game and you don't have any patience - well...then don't buy the game. But if you love harry potter and a challenging game then I recommend that you buy this game!

The Best Actor Ever, November 19, 2002

I loved the game because it is adventurous and I liked finding things. There are difficult parts such as going to Diagon Alley.

I thought getting money from Gringotts too.(leaping over sticks relates to me a lot)Chasing Draco Malfoy was wicked sweet. They should have let me keep the rememberall because I worked for it, but it was his. That sloth brain was hidden in that trapped door, but I got in anyway.(thank god for Ron) :* :! :> (:>)

Not as good as i thought it would be, November 17, 2002

When I first heard of this game in my magazine I couldnt wait to buy it. I bought this game the day it came out and now i cant wait for somebody to buy it off of me. This is definitally not the game i thought it would be I am very dissapionted. I suggest that whoever is reading this review will rent this game before buying it because while some will love this game, others will hate it. All you do is go around collecting wizard cards. You do pointless tasks to get pointless wizad cards. You go to one class a day then your day ends. You do one task a night and your night ends. This keeps repeating until you eventually just quit playing because it's so boring. If you dont want to end your day or night then you dont have to, you can explore but after you explore the first time and complete all the side tasks, there is no point in exploring anymore and you will most likely just end your days and nights as soon as you can. If you are a very big harry potter fan then you night like this just because of the storyline. If you are like me and read the books but are not crazy about them then this game is probably not for you. This game is also not the easiest at some points. I dont think this game is for younger kids because as soon as you get the expelliarmus spell, the game gets a little harder. You then have to time everything. Everytime a spell is casted at you, you have to use the explelliarmus spell to reverse it but you have to time it exactly right and it's not the easiest thing to do. So like I said before, DO NOT GO OUT AND SPEND 50 DOLLARS ON THIS GAME UNTIL YOU PLAY IT FIRST. Rent it to see if you like it first.
