Amazon.com Review: Forget about Super Mario Sunshine--this is the real superstar platform action game of the season. Featuring a pair of wacky robots in a quest to save the universe, Ratchet and Clank may offer the same old basic platform scenario--run around, elude or destroy enemies, jump, and negotiate treacherously dynamic environments--but it has a number of things going for it that place it among the best titles ever in this genre.

The feature that will strike you first is the terrific art direction. Set in a science fiction future, the game has a beautifully executed retro cartoon look (think old Warner Bros.). The attention lavished on every detail, from architecture to character design, makes for a world that feels complete and real. This extends to the cutscenes, which feature a variety of colorful characters given vivid life with excellent voice acting. Then there is the sheer size and level of interactivity of the environments. For me, a particularly stunning moment was when my character was knocked off a skyscraper, but instead of perishing, landed on a ledge and was able to seamlessly navigate to a whole separate section of the game. Another moment of truth came when I aimed my blaster at one of the vehicles whizzing by in the sky. These vehicles were just pretty wallpaper, I thought, but no, the thing blew up. In fact, nearly everything you see is destructible or responsive in some way: you can jump up trees, scuttle over walkways, smash boxes, and climb up ledges. And the control scheme is just complex enough to keep things interesting with multiple weapons and the like, without being bogged down by too many features.

While the routine of finding and destroying enemy robots may get tedious after a while, Ratchet and Clank keeps things interesting with the many metamorphoses of Clank (who takes on forms that surprise even himself), cool weapons like the Glove of Doom (which unleashes armies of tiny Clanks), and shifting first-robot, third-robot points of view.

If this game doesn't become the bestselling platform action game of the year, it will prove that nostalgia for old characters, marketing hype, and brand loyalty really are more important than quality. --David Stoesz

This is the best game I've played in years.

Plot, graphics, gameplay, music... everything is totally top-notch.

Don't buy this game unless you're prepared to waste a LOT of time that could otherwise be spent working, doing yardwork, running errands, and otherwise being a productive member of society.

That's cool! ... Oh, that's cool!, December 4, 2002

That's what I keep saying as I play. That's cool! It's so much fun! My husband and I like platform games, but I'm usually the one playing, and I'm pretty picky about what I like. Rayman2 (for N64 or PS2) is one of my all-time favorites, for example. Spongebob Squarepants (PS2) is another really good one, although it's obviously meant for a younger crowd--still fun, and really funny (booty figures prominently toward the end). If you have played those and like them, Ratchet and Clank fits into this same category, I think, and if you like Ratchet & Clank, you might consider Rayman and Spongebob. Anyway, it's really fun, it's funny, and you get really cool gadgets with which you can smack, bomb, torch, and crunch your enemies with. Clank, Ratchet's little sidekick, reminds me of the Iron Giant and David Hyde Pierce (that's a compliment, by the way). Anyway, lots of fun! Can't wait for Ratchet & Clank 2!

Put down that Turkey Leg, December 2, 2002

Time to forget about the Turkey. Forget about the Football game.

Thanksgiving was spent playing a rented Ratchet and Clank disc. From the get-go, the game was great. No naps after the turkey, back into the game....and played until sun down. There are not enough hours in the day to play this awesome game (played with a friend taking turns Friday and Saturday). It is by far the best platformer that I have played. Multiple levels, hidden objects, weapons galore (buy weapons with collected nuts and bolts at special "stores"). Shoot all kinds of stuff, even what I thought were space ships just for a cool look, shoot them for skill points.

Flying via Clanks upgrade to a Helicopter pack. Use a weapon that sucks water out of a holding tank. Leave mines. Don't forget the hidden gold bolts. Use them later to upgrade all of your weapons to more powerful ones. Can't believe this game. Go out and get you some!!! I did. Put one in your cart now!!

A Must Have For The PS2, December 1, 2002

I am not much of a platformer-game fan, but this game is absolutely incredible. The graphics blew me away. they are clean, crisp, running at 60 fps, and colorful. The weapons are a blast and rather original. It is a lot of fun to use the suck cannon and suck up enimies to shoot out at other enimies. The controls are tight and responsive. I never blame the game controls because i died. there were a few parts that seemd rather frusterating (for example, running away from the water), but on a whole, this game excells in all aspects.

Best RPG Game I've played on any platform, November 30, 2002
Reviewer: Pat Brown from Round Rock, Tx United States
... I've played most of the RPG games on PS1, PS2 and Gamecube and N64 and I will tell you this is the best one and by a stretch. These games include.
1. Spyro 1,2,3
2. Banjo Kazooie and Tooie
3. All the Mario Games (N64, Gamecube, Gameboy)
4. Star Fox Adventures
5. Jak and Daxter
6. Crash Bandicoot Series

The closest to come to it would be the Zelda Ocarina game
Why?
1. Graphics are wonderful and framerate is perfect, camera angles are not cumbersome
2. Need a little help. Its all online in the game. Why do I always need a manual just to play a game or search the internet for tips. Not just help but maps telling you where you need to go and where you have been?Wow what a concept!
3. Originality - Sure they borrowed from several games but I still thought this was the most original game I've played
4. Fun.....there I said it. This game is fun. Most of the others are just downright frustrating. Other games are just a challenge. This is more fun and still a challenge

My hats go off to the programmers and artists at Insomniac. This is the game of the year in my opinion

This game is... my god... just the most amazing thing you'll ever see. You must buy it. Let me explain why.

I bought this game yesterday at the mall. I went home and put it into my PS2. And I haven't played any other one of m7 games since. Ratchet and Clank is the totally awesome visual masterpiece of the 21st century. The graphics are beyond belief... and I just started! However, it does get somewhat hard and there are a few surprises. But you can do many things from getting out of a exploding space station, from riding a hoverboard, gringing rails, having battles on top of trains, and defeating bosses. However, even the first boss is really hard. You should buy this game. But if in the game you have a chance to buy a gadget, DO IT. This game has 36 different weapons. Yet so far, I have only about 14 of them. They are things like flamethrowers, blasters, bombs, gloves that shoot killer robots, suction cannons, and more. The reason this game may be hard sometimes is because when you have lots of weapons and you're stuck, one or more will get yoou out of the situation... you just have to find which one. Buy all of the weapons from the gadgetrons as soon as you have enough bolts. But I have to say that even though this game may have its tough spots, it's a must buy.

This game will just blow you away!! You get so many choices from the different weapons to the different levels. There are MANY levels all of which are challenging, but not so hard that you'll get discouraged easily. Insomniac Games did such a wonderful job on this you may find yourself just having Ratchet stand still so you can look at everything in the levels. Everyone in our family really enjoys playing this game and we recommend it to everyone we know! Definitely worth getting and playing again and again and again and again!!!!!

fun as hell, November 27, 2002

I am not a big fan of platform games because they are usually too repetitive, with the same enemies on each level. Rachet and Clank is a whole new level of platform games. Not since GTA 3 has there been such a revolution of gameplay for a genre. In the next year the market is going to be flooded with platform games that try to copy the gameplay of this game. From the moment I put the game into my PS2, I have not turned it off. In fact it is on right now as I write this review. The levels are just beautifully designed, there are 36 different weapons to choose from plus the wrench that you start with(this is not your daddy's platform game), there are different enemies on each level, the difficulty of the game increases as you play, you get to choose which levels you get to go to and it is recommended since you will need a certain gadget from one level to complete another level, when you return to a level the difficulty increases slighty, you play as two different characters( mostly rachet), you can upgrade Clank(the robot) to turn him from a tiny robot to a giagantic killing machine, there is actually an entralling storyline(unlike most platform games), and there is so much more that I could mention but if you have read this far and have decided not to buy this game then you should sell you PS2 and all your video games and buy a book or watch some T.V. because you are not a true gamer. Go buy a Game Cube and play some childish games like Super Mario Party because you don't deserve to hold a PS2 controller if you can't get into Rachet and Clank. This is one of the best games ever and is even better than GTA Vice City because Rachet and Clank is the most original game since the first Grand Theft Auto on the first Playstation. Why are still reading this? You need to go out buy this game or put this in your shopping cart and buy it later so you can say that you own one of the greatest games ever, and you will being saying that from the moment you begin playing this game. You will be telling your grandchildren about this game. BUY IT NOW OR REGRET IT FOREVER!

this game is cooloroonie. It is like.... AWESOMEEEE! It's like... um.... better than eating beans for the first time and farting out hotdogs and paper plates.

But it may not be as good if the hotdogs are Ball Park Franks.
