Amazon.co.uk Review: Eidos’s stylish, strategic, and almost puzzlelike Hitman 2: Silent Assassin makes its console debut, managing to address many of the criticisms that haunted the PC original while still falling short of its potential. The premise casts the player as a genetically modified hit man, forced out of retirement when things get a little personal. Each level then sets up an overall mission, broken down into subobjectives, thankfully with a much-requested save game feature included in case things get a little hairy. This isn’t your standard walk-and-shoot kind of game, though; Hitman 2 rewards planning, and lots of it. While there’s no fixed linear route through any of the levels, each will require a lot of thought to be defeated.

What limits the game’s potential are a continual stream of frustrations. The enemy artificial intelligence, for instance, is sometimes very sadly lacking, and there are occasions when the pace drops to snail-like speed, without always generating sufficient tension to carry the player through. That said, when it hits top gear Hitman 2 can be tense, atmospheric, and enjoyable. Graphically it’s very polished, and those who enjoy games that reward solid thinking more than an itchy trigger finger will certainly find something to enjoy. It's undoubtedly a step forward from its predecessor, but still falls short of what could have been. --Jon Foster

Amazon.com Product Description: Hitman 2: Silent Assassin is the sequel to the popular Hitman: Codename 47. Once again, you enter the mind of the Hitman, a for-hire assassin trying to escape a violent past. Eventually, you are lured back into your trade by a twisted Russian crime boss bent on assisting rogue countries for his personal and financial gain. You soon realize that you are caught in the middle of a ring of deception, and discover that you have become a target yourself, of a highly trained ex-Spetsnaz assassin. Utilize stealth, tact, and survival instincts to complete your missions.

From the Manufacturer: Step into the world of a cold-blooded killer for hire, hunting and stalking your prey in a deadly game of cat and mouse. Obtain a disguise, find a way in, and silently finish the job unnoticed, or kick down the front door with gun's blazing, and take everybody out. It's completely up to you how to fulfill the contract. Be warned, some of your targets are heavily guarded, as well as completely paranoid. They'll be expecting you

This game has something different from other action games. Well firstly you can change your cloth and spy on the enemies. The action part is great you have so many weapons to choose from under your cloth range from pistol to powerful rifle.

The camera angel is quite frustrating at first but when you get used to it you just can't stop blowing those guys away by your machine gun . Buy it man!

COMPLETELY ORIGINAL!, November 27, 2002

This game is so awesome. Unlike most other games out there, it's not a random kill em all and run game. You have to straegically plan out your routes, targets, and escape. Use silenced weapons, so as not to alert other enemies, hide the body and take their clothes. From their you move around the area, without the enemy even knowing you're their, make your hit and leave. You get a higher rating for less agression and killing only your target(s). Definately buy this, it gives the biggest rush when you complete your mission, leaving the enemy completely clueless of your presence. Nothing has ever been done like this it's the greatest.

Sound:Exellent sound effects, and ok voice acting.
Value:This game seems so boring that I probobly won't play it again, or finish it, but seeing as how I'm starting to somehow go through missions with my guns blazin' I just might finish it
Overall:whoever said u can't beat this wit gunz blazin' I can prove em' wrong after dying like 8 times, but this game is enjoyable, especially if u are a fan of Metal Gear, and crave stealth games

What's there to like?, November 23, 2002

Every year around Thanksgiving, I always get several new games for PS2. I've had faith in my magazine I subscribe to, and have managed so well in the past at getting awesome games that my bros seem to depend on me to make a good decision. This year, I went out on the limb to buy Hitman 2, which I thought would surely make a great game as every review I've seen has been almost perfect. For the first year in my 'fantabulous game' streak, I got a terrible game.

When you start out in Hitman, you get a basic (if not overly simple) tutorial on how to play the game. It's enough to get you hyped up to play the game, but that's about as fun as the game gets.

Although the game does have a unique story line, an interesting concept, and a nice list of weapons, it fails to deliver a quick paced, get in - get out feel that you'd imagine a hitman would have. The game depends far too much on the player's patience.

For example, once you start in on your first mission, you feel like you can take on the world - like the perfect hitman. So, you listen to what the game all but tells you, and kill and assume the role of a helpless postman. Fair enough. But as soon as you walk to the gate and get searched by the guards, you get gunned down after they discover your sidearms. Okay...so this time you try again by leaving your weapons outside. Again, you're gunned down for letting a guard see you try to enter a room beyond the front door. Am I the only one that finds that ridiculous? After replaying the mission to death, I decided to run in guns blazing and managed to beat the first mission.

Beyond just requiring your patience, the game seems to ask the impossible at times. For another example, some missions require you to find your sniper rifle and then head to a designated sniping point to make a shot. Sounds easy enough, but just getting to the location is a feat in itself. If guards see you with the rifle, they start blazing. If you try to assume the role of a guard and then try to carry a sniper rifle, they still start blazing upon seeing you. Why does it have to be this hard?

Even just walking from place to place is annoying. If you run, guards will get suspicious and, you guessed it, shoot you. But if you try to walk to where you need to be, it could take hours to play one mission. The 'sneak mode' that you can enter by pressing L1 may help you to take out one guard, but you move so slow that either he'll eventually turn around and see you, or his friends will come to his aid. All this is on the EASIEST setting.

Wow. I have to say I've never played a game quite this bad. The only thing this game is good for is helping you realize that life is short and you need to get off your butt and get outside.

Annoying but pretty, November 21, 2002

Yeah, so it's awesome looking and the range of weaponry is exciting but when it comes down to playing the game, it's too annoying to describe. I for one am sick and tired of the agony one goes through to play a game. Some advise to the game developers out there, just cut it out! You develope this awesome game but make it a pain to play...WHY?! I've played some real difficult games as far as controls are concerned, but this is rediculous. Do you want people to enjoy the game or not? You can impose easy controls on a game and still make it difficult you know. What a waste.
