Amazon.com: One of the most anticipated titles in PlayStation2 history absolutely lives up to the hype. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is the follow-up to one of the most captivating and intelligent adventures on the original PlayStation. Solid Snake, everyone's favorite mullet-sporting supersoldier, is back, along with many other familiar faces and voices. While its predecessor was lauded for telling a complex story, this sequel has even more fascinating twists and turns. Also, like Metal Gear Solid, MGS2 takes console-game storytelling to an entirely new level with stunning in-game movies, great graphics, and game mechanics that let you find your own solutions to challenges. The game's twisting and at times bizarre plot will undoubtedly keep some gamers perplexed.

Konami has replaced the moronic enemies from the first MGS with more cerebral and capable foes; this causes an even greater emphasis on stealth than the original. The controls have been refined and Snake's repertoire of moves has grown, significantly deepening the gameplay. This is, technically and stylistically, one of the best-looking PS2 games on the market. The sound is also topnotch, with a fabulous score and outstanding voice acting. What makes this game such a standout, however, is how all of these sight, sound, and story elements combine to immerse the player into an entertainment form somewhere between movie and game. It will be years before Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is surpassed. This is interactive entertainment at its finest. --Raymond M. Padilla

Pros:
One of the best and most complex stories in gaming
Outstanding graphics with many interactive elements
Excellent soundtrack and voice acting

Cons:
Long periods of watching instead of playing
Some extraneous dialogue
Solid Snake may inspire gamers to grow mullets

Amazon.com E3 Preview: We cut through the flash and noise of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) show floor so we could get the most-awaited--and best-looking--PS2 game out of the way. Even though Konami displayed the playable Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty demo on the Zone of the Enders game disc, a new movie showing even more innovation kept the drool factor high at E3. There's no doubt that this game sets the bar high for smooth, ultrarealistic gameplay and impeccable graphics.

Though we've all seen only a portion of the final game, the demo boasts more features than most games already on or heading to the shelves. In MGS2, players continue the stealthy adventures of Solid Snake, and this time he's on the hunt for the secrets behind stolen technology and his own past. It's a history filled with more cover-ups and conspiracies than a file cabinet jammed with X-Files.

As the story progresses, players are treated to an incredibly impressive world. The environmental effects--rain, wind-fluttered canvas canopies, etc.--are among the most realistic ever seen in games. Characters come to life with finely detailed movements and real-life characteristics. Intuitive controls allow the player to mesh with the lead character, Snake, for easy sneaking, hunching, peeking around corners, and even hanging from ledges. No denying that this overhyped game looks on track to deserve every syllable of prerelease praise. --Eric Twelker

Customer Reviews:
Really outstanding game. Better than the first, December 4, 2002
Reviewer: Thomas Peacock from Valley Center, CA
Here's the story. Solid Snake is back and yeah the graphics are going to be better due to the Playstation 2's performance. But the game is still great. The storyline is awesome. The only problems I had with this game is the fact that there are to much scenes in which the characters talk, but that's how they move the story along. Another problem was the character Raiden. He was the character that moved the game so slow. Luckily in the third installment of Metal Gear, Raiden won't be a character. The graphics are great. The game is so awesome.
Bottom Line: An instant classic.

MGS2, December 3, 2002
Reviewer: A gamer from New York, NY USA
Metal Gear Solid 2 is by far the best game on Playstationg 2. Outsurpassing GTA3. The storyline is thrilling, a great musical soundtrack, and what I think very good cut scenes make this game what it is. But here is a warning. The first few times you play this game (not getting to far un the game) it might seem mediocre. At least this was my experience. But if you keep on playing you'll get hooked, and realize it was better than the first. There is no snow, and just some rain in the Tanker chapter. This is probably the only downside. I'm also a little dissapointed about Snake not being the main character. He's the cagey veteran, you got to keep him in there. Can't wait for MGS3, hope you found this review helpful.

it's really good but....., December 2, 2002

this game is super the game play is exallent the graphics are perfect it's one of the best games I ever saw but I have one little problem I think there should be more Snake in the game you only play him in the tanker level when I played this game I thought that you'll switch back and forth between Raiden and Snake but you only play Raiden after the tanker level Raiden is a new person in foxhound and a rookie during the game you'll find out more about him any this is a great game you should rent it before buying it that way you'll get a better idea what I'm talking about.

Finished on Extreme difficulty, December 2, 2002

This game gets better each time I beat it. Its amazing. I finally finished it on extreme difficulty. It took 24 hours to complete and was an incredible gaming experience. You haven't finished MGS2 until you have beaten it on extreme difficulty without radar.

I wasn't too impressed last fall but one year can make quite a difference.

A Game Of Many Contrasts, December 2, 2002
Reviewer: J-Nizzo from Nowhere, USA
Metal gear 2 is a game of many contrasts that I will discuss in this review. First let's start with the gameplay: I've never been a huge fan of this franchise to begin with and while I do like how the game mixes things up some times by introducing different styles of play, I have never found it that rewarding. I also think that the guards (enemies) are ridiculously stupid, I mean you can actually stand about ten feet in front of a guy and he won't notice you. How are you supposed to feel good about your stealthing abilities if the guards are that stupid. Don't get me wrong I do like this game, in fact I liked this game in some ways that apparently other gamers didn't. Which brings me to the next part of the review, the story: The word on this game is that it has a bad story, now I don't think the story is the problem; my main grip was with the script. I thought the script was at most times just plain lame. The stuff with Raiden's girlfriend Rose is especially horrible and comes pretty close to ruining the game completely. It's just so utterly bad, the dialog seems to have been taken from a romance novel that was written by some pubescent teenage girl. But beyond the script I thought the overall story was actually pretty good. That said let's get to the final part of my review, which is the graphics: MGS 2 probably shines best in this category. I think the visuals are very good and this is coming from someone who is reviewing this game about a full year after it's original release. The shadow and lighting effects are quite impressive and the character models are great, I also appreciated the amount of detail put into generally every aspect of the levels. My only real complaint about the graphics is with were you spend most of your time in the game, the off shore treatment plant. In my opinion the tanker level, which you start on while playing as Solid Snake, was much more appealing. I found the plant to be a little bland quite frankly and also somewhat boring. It seems to me that the developers spent a lot more time on the much shorter tanker portion of the game and kind of skimped out on the vastly longer lasting treatment plant part, and I'm not just talking about the graphics ether, I'm talking about virtually every aspect of the game.

To some up my general opinion of this videogame I think I'd say that it's a lot like a big Hollywood blockbuster; it had a lot of hype surrounding it that it probably didn't live up to, it had great special effects backed by a questionable script, and it defiantly made a lot of money. Also like a big Hollywood movie there's probably a lot of better stuff out there that you're going to miss. But that said I still enjoyed this title and can't say that I wouldn't go out and bye the next one. (and there will be a next one) I guess as a man who appreciates a quality, well rounded game it has become sort of a guilty pleasure.

Three stars!

The only game to receive THAT much hype and live up to it., November 30, 2002

Metal Gear Solid 2 has everything. Some games feature incredible attention to detail, and others do not. This game clearly sticks in my mind as an incredible example of the prior. It's totally immersive. Every spy game is going to rip it off for years to come. Look at Splinter Cell. It lacks the polish of MGS2 and the plot is clearly weak (in my opinion, of course).

Detail. Take just the tanker for example. The friggin' wind changes direction, and if you go into first person mode, more or less rain will cloud your vision depending on whether you're facing into or against the wind. Who pays attention to those details? That amazes me. Compare that to Splinter Cell where polygons from your character's head will disappear into objects on the walls because the attention to such details is absent.

I will maintain that to this day I have yet to see anything impress me visually as much as MGS2. The only worthy competition is FFX or DOA3. This game is the total package. If you want gameplay, there's tons to do here. It was incredible to learn of some of the crazy things that people would try to do. The music is also worthy of praise, as much of Henry Gregson Williams' score, and especially his rendition of the MGS theme are good enough to stand on their own. The plot really is excellent, despite the fact that it is convoluted at times. Most video game plots are to some extent. In the end, what you're left with is an interpretation, but I think that's part of what Hideo Kojima wanted was something that would make people think. And, it apparently has, so I don't see how that's a failure as some people would label it.

I stand firm in my judgement that MGS2 deserves a spot amongst the greatest video games ever. It's a complete polished package that you don't get anywhere else.

I played it, so listen, November 29, 2002

The graphics ,the new abilities, the storyline where you wish you could tell the world that Sergei Gurlokovich(im not sure if this is correct}was mentitioned in Metal Gear Solid(and also many more connections wich some may remember from MGS 1) ,and the new equipepment are great. But it lacks three things. The game was not as long as MGS 1. ( If you didin't finish don't read this one ) It would much better if you had the Sword (I think it was a Katana) earlier.Like in the beggining of the game.Even though it was supposed to be ( you'll understand this if you finished it) , it is too much like MGS1 . So the story Is A very little bit .........umm ...how should I put this..... Bad.

No Snake no Game, November 24, 2002
Reviewer: Mario Oliver
Metal Gear Solid 2 is one of the best follow up's I've ever seen since GTA 3 but why the ...named Riden takin ova the picture. The game was diffrent and a quite bit worse without snake.

Gameplay:Well, u can enter first person mode, stickpeople up, put em' anywhere u want, U can fire in intrusion mode, and have a radar in hard and extreeme, and the good ol things u could do in MGS. Alot more to do

Graphics:If u saw tha comercial, then do I need 2 say anything about the graphics, they kick sum major bootie

Sound:Great sound effects, and exellen music from movies likr the rock, and very good voice acting, except from the 18 year old(Well he looks like he's a ... teenager, and he don't look like he's a guy that kills people, and he don't look a second over 18)

Value:Beating the game was easy because it was short, then secrets was the next thing I wanted to do, so I got all the dog tags. There's much more to do in this game than MGS that will last for a while

Overall:This game has to be in every PS2er's library of games, and if it ain't, and u call urself a true gammer, why don't u think that over. This game is excellent, except it doesn't have the feel of MGS, and I know jes' why: Cuz the mr.... Riden hogged all the action from the man we all crave for when were playin MG, Solid Snake. It just don't feel like a game without Snake. If Hideo had Snake in the whole time, insted of jes 30 min, this game would'ave been alot mo alive alive fo reel. I recomend this game to anyone with a PS2, period.
